I think it’s fucking dumb, but goddamn are some people really losing their shit over it.
Fears of losing patrons over not even a full dollar increase to their pledge?
I mean, maybe, but that seems pretty fucking petty of a patron to stop supporting a creator they like because they have to pay a little extra so the creator gets to keep more of the money pledged.
Right now, my top patron is giving me $10 a month. They’re looking to have an increase of 64 cents, which will, in return, allow me to have 50 cents extra from their pledge. Having talked to them about the situation(we’re friends on my discord and chat pretty regularly), they put it about as well as I could imagine someone doing so: Fuck like if everything crumbles down for someone cause of loose change, something wrong in the beginning anyway.
And so, I would like to say this, to all the people bitching about the slight price increase: If your financial situation is so fucking bad that an increase of less than one dollar is enough to make you second guess whether or not to support a content creator via patreon, you shouldn’t be supporting anyone on patreon.
And don’t get me wrong: This is not a “fuck you poor fags REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” moment. Shit, I would rather you pirate my stuff if you cannot afford to support me at $3 or $5 or $10 a month than to support me and feel like even the slightest increase would fuck you.
My content is a luxury item. It is not essential for your survival or happiness or whatever. And I still release some content for free.
This is true for every content creator. They are not creating something you require to live or survive or be happy. They are making a product that you should only support if you can do so and literally not miss the amount of money you are giving to them each month.
Do I agree with Patreon’s decision? No. I was fine with taking home 90% of pledges and letting them take 5% and use the other 5% to cover costs for giving me the other 90% of the money. I don’t think they should have forced the patron to foot that bill. If anything, they should make it an option to pay an extra 5% each month to ensure the content creator is getting as much of the pledge each month as possible from patrons who opt in, and then the patrons who opt out of the extra is just a fee the content creator is gonna have to eat(which we have been doing since Patreon fucking started).
Either way, there’s my take. Make of it what you will.
